How to Find the Perfect Niche for You

Niche marketing is still just as strong as it has ever been – yet I’m always asked the question, “what’s the perfect niche to get into?”

And that’s why I wanted to write this blog post and answer that question with a very simple answer…

The perfect niche for you – is YOU.

What I mean by that is that you’re the answer to finding the right niche for you and your business.  You just have to dig a little deeper to find out what drives your passions – then apply those to your business plan.

For example:

  • What do you like to do?
  • What are you naturally good at?
  • What has life experience taught you?
  • What have you accomplished that others could learn from?
  • What are you interested in?

Write everything down – even the most seemingly insignificant things, as they can lead to lots of ideas and potential niches. Once you have your list, it’s time to ask two more VITAL questions:

  • What is the competition like in this niche?
  • Are there people able and willing to spend money in this niche?

Obviously, if you’re interested in everything about training your dog, you’ll face a LOT of competition.  If, on the other hand, you’re passionate about poodles, you can turn that passion into a wide range of niche products specifically tailored to poodle owners – such as grooming tips, training, solving behavior problems, and so on.

Try This Exercise with Index Cards.

Some people find it easier to work with index cards when doing this exercise – writing each niche on a separate card, choosing the top 5 you’re the most interested in, then answering the two vital questions about competition and pay.

The key is to find something you’re naturally good at, or naturally interested in – and people are willing to pay money for it, without you facing a lot of competition.  There are still many such “gold nuggets” out there.

Even if you do have some competition – this is a good thing.  Competition means people are currently paying money for advice/products/services.

What About Fly-By-Night Sites?

You may also find those “wanna-be” niche sites in your area of expertise that seem to have been set up overnight to try and make some quick cash. Don’t be concerned about them. Your passion and ambition for the topic will eventually (sooner, rather than later) outweigh their half-hearted interest, and you’ll reach more of the people you’re looking to reach, because they can tell you’re fascinated and energized by the topic you’re covering.

Above all, the only one who can truly find the right niche for you is you – SEO tools, keyword research tools and other software programs can make narrowing down the list easier, but your passions provide the direction that will set you up on the right path.

Hi Alex, I believe you are right in as much that you are more likely to be able to maintain an ongoing enthusiastic approach to your mission of traffic generation and customer interest if you have a passion driven motivation.

It may be that we do not have the level of self belief to even start to look in that direction. We are all capable but need to believe we are so before we can make that future changing start.

Thank you Alex for your good guidance

    Excellent advice Alex!

Lately becoming an authority in the niche is a must, and that can be achieved only in a niche that one really knows and is passionate about.
Content has been the king and will continue to be. How can someone produce great content if he doesn’t know what he is talking about or he doesn’t enjoy talking about it?

Alex, your approach to IM reminds of this Woody Guthrie quote: “Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple.”

You’re a gifted teacher, and I’m thankful for your blog. I wish everyone could read it, especially the newbies.

You truly create value. Keep up the great work.

    How so very, very true!

Thank you Alex for your words of encouragement.

Hi Alex…. The image with your article says it all. I have an art site and have daily entered content since 2007 and it is a PR6. Only two years ago did I started thinking about how to earn income from the site as I spend so much time in the studio… I was surprised as to the amount of products I could market on a personal website as I was hesitant in doing this as I thought my credibility as as artist may be compromised…. well due to the passion in my field that was not a concern to have been worried about. Visitors can see fairly quickly that if your in it just for the money.

Sharing your passion is the key.

I do have sites on other subjects that I have a personal interest in within health niches and music, mainly guitars… but I have to have some close attachment to that niche other wise it does show even on how one has built the site before entering content.

Passion, plus research then complete the project before you move onto another niche or site building. Focus…focus…focus.

Always look forward to your articles…thanks.

Hi Alex: Well, I did the marketing “dance” to find my niche according to the wsos and all the gurus. I found myself bored with digital marketing, and not so hot at Amazon affiliate stores.

I had started several blogs in my field of health care and nutrition, but didn’t continue because I was searching for something more. The “itch that cannot be ignored”.

Finally, I found a product that has changed my life. It is blue green algae which stimulates natural stem cell production in the bone marrow. Those stem cells migrate to diseased organs or injuries and heals them at the cellular level.

The product rejuvenates and heals your body. I started on it, and now 4 months later I am a totally different person. I have changed from a bent over, crippled old lady due to horrid accidents and bone fractures, relentless pain, and suffering more than I can say.

I am now nearly pain free, can stand up straight and my spine is healing thanks to stem cells. To quote a line from a Pink Floyd song: “I’m coming back to life”

This is my PASSION! Oh, Lord, my PASSION! Thank You So Much! (Never doubt Heavenly Guidance)

So, I found the right theme, bought the exact name domain and published a website for my PASSION.

You are so correct, Alex. Passion simmers, but it is PASSION that will light your inner fire each day when you sit at the computer and totally dig what you are doing.
